Zozobra

Old Man Gloom

Although this may seem like a terrifying photo, to the special few, this is simply a great party. In New Mexico, the tradition of burning a giant marionette, Zozobra, is the start of fiestas, the week-long cultural celebration. The burning of Zozobra represents the release of gloom, and thousands of people come from all over the state to crowd onto the baseball field to watch. This was taken on my last night before leaving for college, and seemed like quite an appropriate goodbye.
